Urban Parks

November 13th, 2008 · Comments Off · Development

In the Throne Speech, Government announced it would do the right thing and move Darrell’s, White’s, and Ports Islands formally into the National Parks System. I look forward to Southlands also being protected as public park space as the Premier has noted is Government’s intention. Stuart Hayward has a good point in noting that the [...]

By Hook or by Crook

November 12th, 2008 · Comments Off · Independence

Dr. Brown says that Bermuda will become independent, either through a conscious decision or by the UK wanting rid of us. “It will come in time. Either we will work our way out of the house, or they will throw us out.” A cynic might speculate that he aims to be such a pain that [...]

Vituperation

November 12th, 2008 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics

Reading this screed, it is hard to believe that Mr. Commissiong is the Premier’s consultant on race relations. It is no wonder that the Big Conversation has not enjoyed wide participation in Bermuda when one of its organisers so gleefully engages in such personal attacks and racial stereotyping. His rant never addresses the legitimate questions [...]

Dodging the Issue

The UK Foreign Affairs Committee published a report earlier this year which included suggestions for improvement to the governance of the Overseas Territories. It included specific areas to improve accountability and transparency in Bermuda. In an effort to shoot the messenger, Dr. Brown criticized the report in Parliament, claiming it “jeopardized” Bermuda’s reputation.  He’s raising [...]

Drone Speech

November 10th, 2008 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics

A reader comments that Today’s Drone Speech was pretty darn light on legislative activity for the coming year. Oh, that’s not entirely true.   They have now tabled a bill that shows how important this Government takes its responsibility. Yes, they have finally tabled the bill to rename the Airport after Freddie Wade. Whew, wouldn’t [...]

Sir Subtle

The Governor made this personal comment in the Throne Speech. I intend to be vigilant in my role of overseeing law and order and some of the accountability, the role prescribed by your Constitution for the Governor. And I intend to do this in tandem with the elected Government because they have the political responsibility [...]

Top That

Not to be topped by Dr Ewart Brown’s rapid congratulations to President-Elect Obama, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda has announced he would take immediate measures to have Boggy Peak, his country’s highest mountain, renamed “Mount Obama.” You want to name Boggy Mountain after the guy?  What, is the Great Dismal Swamp reserved for [...]

Mr. President and Members of the Senate, Mr. Speaker and Members of the Honourable House of Assembly Since Bermuda’s Legislature was last convened, every country in the world has been made to confront the challenges presented by the state of the global economy. Bermuda has been no exception. Although the economy and its various effects [...]

From a reader: If Horton was thrown out for the slow pace of education reform, when do we get Dr. Brown throwing himself out of tourism? Another reader queries the role of the “Education Reform Implementation Committee” appointed by Dr. Brown and headed by Phillip Butterfield.  Does the Minister have control, or does that sidebar [...]
