Spouse License

June 16th, 2010 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics

Der Komissar just announced in the Senate that the controversial deadline for Bermudians to license their foreign spouses has been extended until December. However, the June 1 deadline to license your dog has not changed.  Even if they are a German Shepard or French Poodle.  Damn expat dogs, coming here stealing our kibble.

Fair Elections

June 15th, 2010 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics

I wrote the other day about BNN’s misleading headline about Bermuda’s poor voter registration practices. The UBP has proposed an amendment that would compel the Parliamentary Registrar to do more to keep the voter rolls up to date.  The PLP are signalling that they will oppose the bill. Why?  In the Royal Gazette today: 1. [...]

Misleading Headlines

June 11th, 2010 · Comments Off · Media

BNN is a funny animal.  It seems to me that the site is silent until Walton stumbles across something in Senate or the PLP grapevine.  Is BNN a blog, a news website, or just the “PLP Newswire”? I have to laugh about this headline: Proposed UBP Bill Could See Voters Struck From Register This is [...]

Casino Consequence

June 11th, 2010 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics

So much of the dialogue about organised gambling in Bermuda is (purposefully) rosy, like it will be some sort of magic machine to print money for Government, create jobs, and attract tourists to Bermuda. Although there has been some lip service to “allocating funds to deal with the social ills” that might accompany organised gambling, [...]

Surveillance

June 9th, 2010 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics

The tricky thing for a legislature, during times of stress, is to implement laws that help improve police authority without tumbling over the edge towards authoritarianism. That’s the fight we had in Parliament last week over the law allowing extended detention of suspects by police.  We have taken a law that was developed elsewhere to [...]

Bermuda Media Code of Practice

June 9th, 2010 · Comments Off · Media

As promised, the largest Bermuda media companies have adopted a common Code of Practice aimed at setting a “benchmark for ethical standards, protecting both the rights of the individual and the public’s right to know”. It has been presented to Premier, along with a plan to get a Media Council up and running by September [...]

On Leadership

June 9th, 2010 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics

I meant it.  No I didn’t.  Well, I felt it passionately but got in trouble for saying it even though its probably true.  But as I said I really kind of mean it.  Dammit, it’s the UBP’s fault. Apparently, the Premier entered the Senate Chamber during Marc Bean’s rant last week to glower at him, [...]

Ranting in Senate

June 8th, 2010 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics

Last week, controversial Senator Marc Bean went on a rant criticising the PLP’s handling of the education system.  Is he acting as an understudy to Lt. Col. Burch as resident-loose-cannon?  Is he trying to out-rolfe Rolfe? He was apparently told off as he’s amended the rant: “Upon reflection I recognise that my words may have [...]

Smear Brigade

June 7th, 2010 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics

The PLP smear brigade was at it again this weekend. On Friday, Parliament was presented a rushed bill to extend Police powers to grapple with the gun violence facing Bermuda.  The bill sought to extend the time that Police can hold someone suspected of gun crimes to 28 days. Both Opposition parties support giving the [...]

No Mandate

June 7th, 2010 · Comments Off · Independence

Bermuda has an unhealthy situation where most voters do not trust our elected leaders.  This is underlined when our politicians jet off around the world for mysterious meetings:  people wonder what on earth they are up to. We had a glimpse of how they conduct themselves during the OTCC pre-meeting this weekend, where they seemed [...]
