Dr. Brown’s PLP have outwitted the UBP at every turn in abusing the rules of the House of Assembly to shut off substantive debate and to avoid transparency.
The UBP’s few opportunities to force an answer have been via questions posed on the floor of the House, of which many were outstanding at the end of the last session of Parliament due to the arcane restrictions on how many may be posed and how much time is alloted.
Several times over the past 6 months, when the Premier has been cornered in press conferences, he has responded that he would not answer journalists’ queries because parliamentary questions on the same subjects were pending. He said he would answer in full on the floor of the House. Not no more.
The latest twist is that the Stooge Speaker of the House has declared those many outstanding questions will now be wiped away because .. well, just because. Presumably because it would be terribly embarrassing for the Premier to have to answer them on record in the House of Assembly. They must hope that last year’s crop of waste and disgrace will be forgotten under the rolling barrage of scandals.
We are seeing a terrible erosion of Bermuda’s institutions and an incredible abuse of power. The manipulation is transparent and artless. Pure politricks.
The UBP (and the soporific PLP backbench) must stop acting like someone farted at the tea party and start fighting for what they know is right. Dr Brown’s insatiable hunger has become the PLP’s problem and Bermuda’s great risk.
