Blustery Opinions From Bermuda

Alexandrina Hall

April 11th, 2008 · No Comments · Development

Alexandrina Hall on Court Street is in danger of falling to the wrecking ball.

It must be preserved. We may not wish to extend the practise of “listing” historic buildings to Hamilton, but we have to put our foot down sometimes.

Not only is this building a unique part of Hamilton’s architectural heritage, it has played important roles in our community for over 150 years. Unlike many old buildings, it is loved with active use today and every day.

Minister Butler has proposed that Government take it on (we’ll see what the boss has to say about that).

I have another idea. Several Bermuda exempt companies have been allowed to acquire Bermuda residential real estate on the pretext that the rent gained from those properties will be applied to Bermuda charities in future.

I say, time to step up to the plate to secure this building for the community.
