Glenn Jones, the Cabinet Office spokesman, went on the flippity-flop today saying that the PLP would use a referendum to determine whether to pursue independence for Bermuda.
While this is wonderful news, it contradicts decades of PLP policy so please forgive us if we want to hear it from the horse’s mouth as it were. Even better, put it in writing!
Even more surprising were Mr. Jones’ other comments, in which he is clearly confused as to his role as spokesperson for the Cabinet Office versus being a PLP party hack:
“The Progressive Labour Party is a party that believes nationhood is in Bermuda’s future. And when that day comes, the PLP will be the right choice for leadership.”
Those are partisan fighting words from someone on the Government payroll, where impartiality is sacrosanct. Yeah yeah yeah, I know the allotments for personal appointments in the Cabinet Office were championed by Sir John Swan, but the PLP has completely torn the ass out of the privilege using it as a way to fund political operatives using the public purse.
This idea has had its day: add it to the reform list. The civil service must be uniformly non-political; if the parties want operatives they can fund them privately and staff them in their own offices.
Happy Thanksgiving to Dr. Brown and all our Bermerican friends.
