I am appalled by the multiple deaths on Bermuda’s roads in the past week - so many from single vehicle accidents.
The Police are correct in stating that people need to take more responsibility for their actions, but I have problems with the claim that “the Police are doing all they can.”
The news reported today “in the past week alone, Police have issued 115 speeding notices — the highest of which was 87 km per hour.” That means they issued a mere 15 speeding tickets a day, or about a ticket every two hours. That’s not much in the way of enforcement.
To give them their due, the Police are so busy reporting the fender benders and cleaning up the carnage there’s apparently not much resource left for basic traffic enforcement. That’s a serious problem.
It’s all well and good to ask young people to serve on the road safety council but only sustained (every day, day in day out) and consistent (everywhere) police enforcement will improve driving behaviour.
