Club Med, Double Zoinks!

April 2nd, 2008 · No Comments · Development, Tourism

Dr. Brown is blowing out all the windows with big announcements today.

Possibly looking to deflect the criticism that Government carelessly exposed hustletruck workers to asbestos, Dr. Brown shed some more light on the redevelopment of the Club Med as a Park Hyatt destination.

The new $290 million development will have 100 hotel rooms, 140 condos for foreigners, and 40 fractional condos. Government will contribute the St. George’s Golf Club to the development.

Without doubt it will be a boom for St. George’s; they’ve waited a long time for this, so congratulations Doc. More cement for Dennis!

Tourism has been synonymous with failure in Bermuda for so long that this is upbeat news. But we have to counter it with some rational thinking: how is Bermuda going to handle the simultaneous development of all these massive projects? Remember we have 12 SDOs on the table. One would have been joyous new, two is a lot to digest, three actually changes our community, etc.

  • We are already overheated – what will this do to our economy? We will need to allow international contractors in to manage the projects as well as import an army of workers to build.
  • Going forward, the Bermudian population will not be able to support even a fraction of the service needs of these large resorts. We will need to allow in large numbers of expatriate hospitality workers.

Sustainable development anyone?
