Blustery Opinions From Bermuda

Drunks

Like most locals, I am distressed and angry over the news of the fatality on Saturday morning, followed by the drunk bike crash near Horsehoe on Sunday night.

At this year’s fatality rate, we could have 20 dead on the roads by December. If we maintain April’s accelerated rate of carnage, we’ll top 30. That’s mindboggling.

If it does not already, Bermuda should have a mandatory requirement that all drivers involved in accidents where this is a serious injury or fatality undergo drug/alcohol testing. Moreoever, we must have laws against the consumption of alcohol or the possession of open containers of alcohol in any motor vehicle.

But the biggest issue is not laws – it’s lack of enforcement. We must have more Police on the street. Short term this includes setting up frequent sobriety checkpoints where vehicles are stopped and drivers questioned according to a formula (such as every third vehicle). The message must be hammered home that drunk driving is unacceptable.
