Election Reform

May 14th, 2008 · No Comments · Accountability, Bermuda Politics, Transparency

The media reports that recommendations to update the Parliamentary Election Act have been forwarded to Cabinet and Government House.

Parliamentary Registrar Randy Scott would not say what had been recommended but described it as “a pretty comprehensive package of suggestions”.

Asked if the Opposition would get the report Mr. Scott said he would “most likely” give them a presentation. “If I have to do it for one I have got to do it for the other so the Opposition would probably most likely be included but I haven’t got the green light yet.”

Appalling. In the name of equity and transparency, it’s remarkable that changes to the Parliamentary Election Act could be proposed without structured involvement of all political parties, and then be provided solely to the political incumbent.

This document should have been released to the public and the political parties simultaneously. To do otherwise risks attracting accusations of favoritism.
