After two weeks of mysterious silence, House Speaker Stanley Lowe today reversed the ban on many parliamentary questions to Ministers. In doing so he lays bare the tampering being undertaken in Bermuda’s institutions to avoid transparency and accountability in our Government. He said:
“Even more unfortunate was a most extraordinary press release from the Cabinet Office which left the mistaken impression that the Speaker had approved such a release and also unwittingly brought into question the independence and integrity of the Speaker’s Office.”
Indeed. This action does question the integrity of the Cabinet Office. My respect for Speaker Lowe has moved up a notch, as this move will not have won him many friends in the power clique.
I’ll make my normal observation that Parliament is meeting today:
- No public schedule has been published.
- There is no live TV coverage.
- There is no Hansard transcript.
This distance and obscurity encourages the abuses and hijinks that dominate our legislature these days.
