Realising that his popularity dies a little every time he opens his mouth these days, Dr. Brown has entered stealth mode for the election. He’ll show up and look beautiful every now and then, but won’t say much of consequence unless it gets really nasty.
The oddity is that, despite having called the election, the PLP seems very ill prepared for it. Like maybe they were pushed into it unwillingly? Hmm, anyone?
So far, they have not laid out a coherent platform mainly because so many of their hallmark initiatives (such as the land discrimination and the racial quota laws) are deeply divisive in the community.
Instead, there’s a desperate search on within Government to find any good news that can be dressed up and shoved out on stage. This has led the PLP to trod on a longstanding tradition (not just in Bermuda) that, once an election is called, Government should not make major policy or monetary commitments. That’s a bad precedent.
This week has been particularly odd, with the UBP repeatedly making strong commitments or jumping the headlines, causing that darling Lt. Colonel and his hustle truck to bustle on over exclaiming “yeah, we’re gonna do that too!”
And the Finance Minister went on the record proclaiming her support for Dr. Brown. Not her normal loquacious self, she sounded like she was giving the play-by-play on a root canal.
