Obama has a lot of support from Bermuda, partially due to his theme of bipartisanship. Whether he’s earnest or not, it strikes a hopeful chord for the 48 percent of Bermudians who are disenfranchised by our current government.
There’s another reason that support is shifting his way in local circles. You see, it is nearly obligatory for US presidental candidates to slur the offshore world. So far Obama’s threats have been to stop tax evasion by Americans, which is fair enough.
On the other hand, Clinton has revealed plans to directly interfere with international business. In a statement, she said she would, “eliminate the unfair advantage that foreign insurers located in tax havens have against U.S. insurers competing for US business.”
You see, American tax overregulation has strangled the ability of domestic providers to properly serve their market. So obviously the solution is to try and strangle the overseas competitors as well.
