The developments in the SDO explosion are repeatedly called “Hotels.” Let’s be clear - they are not hotels. They are mainly vacation homes for rich foreigners or condos for business travelers.
And this leads to a question: how many of these properties are allowed to have cars?
I see the new 81-unit “hotel” on Reid Street will include 42 condominiums and 39 residences … and will offer parking for 39 cars. Except for its supersized mass, I generally support this particular development. But it should have gone through normal Planning channels. And whoa nelly that’s a lot of new cars!
It is not sustainable for Bermuda if that pattern is being repeated in the other huge SDO developments for foreigners, many of which presumably have the right to own cars under current law.
I was under the impression that the other recent large urban residences had their automobile rights restricted, no? A couple of years ago, didn’t Dr. Brown announce that car sharing was to be introduced for the fractionals at Tucker’s Point? What happened to that?
