Common Sense

Earlier this week a senior British diplomat, Leigh Turner, said political independence is a matter entirely for the Overseas Territories, even as he said he would welcome some of them breaking ties with the United Kingdom.

I guess he’s met our Premier.

In response, the Caribbean’s top diplomat and CARICOM booster, Sir Ronald Sanders cautions that the remaining OTs in the Caribbean should not pursue political independence at this time.

“They have not had the high cost of independence. They have not had to sustain foreign missions all over the world. They have not had to participate in international affairs, which is a high cost for independent countries and they’ve also not had to provide for their security.”

“I think they are better off at this point in which they enjoy access to Europe as citizens, they can go live in any area of Europe they want, they can go to university there, they enjoy all of those benefits, while at the same time they are freed of the costs of independence.”
