Think Carefully on Morgan’s Point

Most Bermudians are pleased that the Jumeirah group is willing to consider Morgan’s Point instead of the Southlands property. It makes sense.

However, as Morgan’s Point represents a unique “land bank” for Bermuda’s future needs, the deal must be subject to public scrutiny and due process. Dr. Brown has reported that Government will assume the cost of the environmental clean up – estimated in the tens of millions of dollars – but has not indicated how much land will be involved in the swap and other terms. Southlands is 37 acres while Morgan’s Point encompasses 260 acres including a vast variety of landscapes and an extensive shoreline.

The deal is obviously expanding and Bermudians are suspicious given the “inside track” that has prevailed so far in the Southlands saga, running contrary to both public opinion and Government’s own policies. We must make sure a master plan is developed for the whole pensinsula that also encompasses public access with trails, waterfront, and park land … transportation needs … marine sports … and of course a variety of Bermudian neighborhoods. Hell, you can even throw in a stem cell clinic or two.

But, Morgan’s Point must not become solely a massive enclave catering only to wealthy foreigners. That would be a tragedy for Bermuda. This deal must be equitable to all Bermudians, not just the developers and elite. The best way to accomplish that is by having negotiations and planning overseen by a bipartisan commission, as well as independent advisers.

Don’t rush or railroad this for short term political gain.
