Southlands, Zoinks!

April 2nd, 2008 · No Comments · Development, Tourism

Government has just announced that a sweetheart land swap has been completed with the owners of the Southlands resort. They will get just over two acres of land at Morgan’s Point for each acre of land at the Southlands location on South Shore, which will likely be turned into a park.

However, the new development will be significantly larger in size including two seperate hotels of 450 rooms, a private residence club (fractionals) of another 450 condos, a spa, a marina and shopping village, and an 18-hole golf course. Wow, that’s incredible. Welcome to Bermeirah! Just think of all the cement they’ll need!

Now, if Jumeirah will have 80 acres and rent a further 130 acres for the golf course, that leaves 40 acres of Morgan’s Point left, right? Right? Given the massive development now taking place in Bermuda, this land should be restored and turned into public access parkland. This would be of immeasurable benefit to Bermudians’ mental and physical health, as well as compliment both the new resort and the new cruise hub at the Dockyard. We don’t want the entire Morgan’s Point peninsula turned into an off-limits zone to Bermudians.
