On the 40th anniversary of democracy in Bermuda, the Premier last night “shut down” a Parliamentary debate saying Government will do the same “every time there is the implication or insinuation of something dishonest or corrupt” by the Opposition.
Dr. Brown’s approach appears to be a tactic to avoid the scrutiny raised on the floor of the House regarding the PLP’s handling of the Stonington lease, special development order, and now tax concessions.
It turns out, the Stonington lease was quietly increased from 21 years to 50 with a five year rent-free period. It also threw in five additional acres of woodland reserve property under the restriction the land would not be touched. However that restriction was then overturned in the SDO, allowing a condominium tower and other development to be added on the woodland. And now, a tax concession is being requested for the entire development.
It is perfectly logical that the Opposition should ask questions regarding the repeated unusual circumstances with this property. By shouting down every question or request for accountability as an accusation of racism or unfairness, the PLP is proving just how immature Bermuda’s democracy is.
Apparently it’s just not Parliament that’s being taught to Smell the Glove, it’s also the citizenry:
A Devonshire man who yelled out profanities to the Premier during a press conference and escaped by a motorcycle has been fined $300 when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court.
On May 7 at 1.45 p.m., plain clothed Police officers were on duty guarding Premier Ewart Brown at a press conference held at the Rubber Tree, next to Warwick Post Office.
Robinson rode down Khyber Pass on his motorcycle and yelled out: “Premier, stop spending our money. Now f**k off.”
Ah, yes, traffic cops are rarer than cahows, but watch out for Dr. Brown’s personal Etiquette Police!
