Harrassment

November 16th, 2007 · No Comments · Bermuda Politics

Police raided the Auditor General’s office again this morning. Auditor General Larry Dennis told the media he believes the Police are trying to link him to ‘Son of the Soil’ Harold Darrell, but denies that connection.

This new incident seems to support the UK National Audit Office’s report that the auditor’s independence and ability to investigate Bermuda’s public purse is a “fragile privilege, not ensured by legislation alone”.

The Bermuda Government continues to throw massive resources into covering up the BHC affair, and not one ounce of effort into correcting the laws so that unethical behaviour will no longer be tolerated amongst our leaders.

This type of crap just doesn’t happen in first world countries. What a shame for Bermuda. It is our loss that the Police act as political agents, and that the Governor and his FCO colleagues do not support our Auditor General in doing his constitutionally-defined job.

Even more so, this type of action is worrisome for the international business that is the core of our economy, no matter if you are a Bermudian mason or an actuary. Many CEO’s might like to rough up their auditors, but few would actually dare to do it. That our Government feels so untouchable and militant that they can get away with it shows we have a major problem.

Roll on election day!
