It does not make sense to me that our Government invests huge sums every year in projects like the African Diaspora Trail, that are so remote from lives of Bermudians and unlikely to contribute to our community or economy, but will not make any effort to preserve elements of our own local black history.
Like Cobbs Hill Wesleyan Methodist Church in Warwick, Alexandrina Hall is a symbol of a community overcoming adversity. And it is not just a historic relic, the Hall serves an important role today providing a much needed venue for the arts and youth in the City. This building, and the work of the other lodges, should be highlighted as a source of pride … not bulldozed.
The Diaspora is important but it’s diffuse, it’s distant, and it’s irretrievable. Bermuda history affects your life, it’s relevant, and it’s right in front of you. You can do something about it.
Shame on the Oddfellows for seeing themselves as the end of the line instead of taking the responsibility to preserve a tradition and resource for the next generations. Shame on you for grabbing the buck.
And shame on Government for passing this opportunity – for seeing Hamilton as simply a site for international corporate development before seeing it as our home town.
