Nasty Work

The expected dirty tricks have started, with the Dr. Brown’s PLP appearing to commence the use of American “push polling” disinformation tactics over the past few days.

Push polling, for those of you with morals, is a smear technique where a poll is used to spread false negative claims about one’s opponent. Large numbers of respondents are contacted, and little or no effort is made to collect and analyze response data. Really, the push poll is a form of telemarketing masquerading as a survey.

After some major abuses, the strategy is increasingly controversial in the US. In fact, the trade association of pollsters in the US identifies the use of push polls as “unethical conduct” (ooooh, there’s that word again!)

According to reports at Politics.bm, the PLP appear to be using The Parker Group, a political telemarketing company with more than 256 calling stations based out of Birmingham, AL. The company has been found guilty of race discrimination in the past, yielding a court judgement that describes many of their manipulative practices.

There is an active movement in the US to forbid or control push polling, leading to new regulations at both the state and federal levels. That’s another one for the Bermuda reform list.

These abusive tactics show the lengths that Dr. Brown and the current PLP clique will go to avoid discussing the real issues. The sad irony: the harder they push, the less people trust them.
