The first time the Road Safety Council staged roadside wrecks, a year ago, it was effective. The second time, it started to turn into a drama project. Next time it will probably have Gombeys.
Some towns in the US take this approach with high school students. If a kid is killed in a preventable wreck, they’ll drop the crushed vehicle in front of their school, blood stains and all. Now that can have an impact, because it’s real and personal. Even then, the verdict is out on whether it’s effective.
But you really want effectiveness: the answer is much more mundane.
STANDARDS. EDUCATION. TESTING AND LICENSING. ENFORCEMENT. POLICE.
There’s no mistake that many of Bermuda’s worst accidents take place late at night. Drunk driving is widely tolerated here. We can’t expect bars to police this. We must hammer home in every medium that drunk driving is unacceptable. We must have visible sobriety checkpoints more frequently. If we don’t already, we must have laws against the consumption of alcohol or the possession of open containers of alcohol in any motor vehicle.
