Blustery Opinions From Bermuda

Robocalls

The PLP adopted urban US political strategy wholeheartedly this campaign. From the agressive start, to the game of “hide the candidate” to distance him from the smear campaign waged by his proxies, followed by a warm and healing reintroduction of the candidate in the closing hours. From the “push polls” to sow disinformation, to the staged rallies to raise the emotional heat, it’s classic.

As predicted some time ago, the PLP has now moved to “robocalls” … where voters are blasted by automated phone calls with pre-recorded messages … to stoke up the emotional heat and to get the vote out.

Given the number of traditional PLP voters who have expressed in the media in recent weeks that they planned to stay away from the polls, you can expect massive pressure tomorrow to get out the vote.

It will be interesting to see what friction this causes at the polling stations tomorrow (I do not expect Dr. Brown’s team to back off from their aggressive behaviour this late in the game). They may get out the vote, but will the number of spoiled ballots go up?

The PLP had plenty of money to spend this campaign: pity they spent most of it in the US. Plus, I didn’t see a union bug on any of their printed materials from the US. That’s a remarkable faux pas for a labour party.
