Senate Oversight

June 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Following Parliament’s failure to fulfill its responsibilities, following Dr. Brown’s shut down of debate, to oversee Government’s controversial activities at the Stonington property, the Opposition has called for a full and complete debate in the Senate which meets today.

The goal of the Senate is to act as an “Upper House” that mitigates the emotional excesses of the House of Assembly with more stable and responsible debate. Let’s see if they can struggle free of the “cult of coverup” that seems to dominate public life and actually do the people’s business.

That’s right: the people’s business. Not the Doctor’s…

I’ll make my normal observation that:

  • No schedule has been released to the public stating when the Senate meets, or what they will discuss today.
  • There is no live coverage on our spiffy multimillion dollar CITV station.
  • Unusual among democracies, there is no Hansard transcript.

This distance and obscurity encourages the abuses and hijinks that dominate Bermuda’s legislature these days.
