Those fancy radio tags that TCD has been putting on cars? It never made sense that they were just for checking the validity of registrations (other cheaper options could have clamped down on that). Now that most cars have the tags, TCD is more comfortable talking about the future:
[TCD director] Mr. Rochester agreed that it was now almost inevitable that the island would follow London and other cities that have introduced a charge for driving into central areas at peak times. The island’s new radio tags — designed to catch drivers who do not licence their vehicles — could easily be adapted to enforce a charge for driving into Hamilton during rush hour.
Unless government is just hungry for the taxes, other approaches need to be looked at first. First would be extending the current work to increase the availability and reliability of public transportation. Second would be exploring the increased use of school buses, including at the island’s private schools. Third would be clarifying its policy on the cars at the new SDO resorts and large urban developments.
