Traffic

October 30th, 2008 · Comments Off

Many local schools are out for mid-term break this week, leading to the sudden evaporation of Bermuda’s morning rush hour.
Traffic has been very light all week.  Poof!
I think Bermuda doesn’t have a traffic congestion problem.  It has a school transportation problem.

Trucks

October 22nd, 2008 · Comments Off

Well, that was interesting.  Anyone coming into town this morning is probably a little frazzled by the massive traffic backlogs, exacerbated by large numbers of trucks moving in convoy.
Apparently they are staging a protest over Government’s allowing several construction firms to use large quarry dumpster trailers.  You see the law states that these huge trailers […]

Tag, You’re It!

August 24th, 2008 · Comments Off

TCD has released some details about how their RFID tagging system is working.
In the first 8 weeks that its four sensors have operated, the system has issued up more than 1,580 violations, each bringing a fine of between $750 to $1,000.
Based on that performance, it’s likely that TCD’s previous estimates that up to […]

Tag, You’re It!

June 11th, 2008 · Comments Off

If all went to plan, last week Government turned on the RFID tags that have been applied to every car and truck in Bermuda.
It is hoped the “radio frequency ID” tags will reduce the number of vehicles operating without a license. Government reckons that around 6,000 vehicles in Bermuda are unlicense, costing at least […]

Sleeping Policemen

May 21st, 2008 · Comments Off

This is just one of the many signs that Bermuda does not take traffic enforcement seriously. Following a collision with a car that allegedly ran a red light more than a month ago, a rider had his leg amputated.
Mr. Planes is disappointed with the police response to the accident. The driver of the car […]

Same Old

May 16th, 2008 · Comments Off

The driving “points” system is intended to some teeth to traffic enforcement.
But the Bermuda Sun has revealed that the system is not particularly effective as systems have not been created to track the demerits.
And today, the Sun reveals that the Courts are not following the demerit tables anyway.
The idea of points systems is to reduce […]

Mass Dumping

April 29th, 2008 · Comments Off

A KBB cleanup just found 90 car batteries thrown in the bushes on North Shore. That’s not litter, that’s a toxic waste site.
It cannot be hard to find the garage (or their trucker) that is illegally dumping one and a half tons of hazardous materials in the bushes. This should be treated as […]

Drunks

April 28th, 2008 · Comments Off

Like most locals, I am distressed and angry over the news of the fatality on Saturday morning, followed by the drunk bike crash near Horsehoe on Sunday night.
At this year’s fatality rate, we could have 20 dead on the roads by December. If we maintain April’s accelerated rate of carnage, we’ll top 30. […]

Carnage

April 15th, 2008 · Comments Off

I am appalled by the multiple deaths on Bermuda’s roads in the past week - so many from single vehicle accidents.
The Police are correct in stating that people need to take more responsibility for their actions, but I have problems with the claim that “the Police are doing all they can.”
The news reported today “in […]

Road Tolls?

April 9th, 2008 · Comments Off

Those fancy radio tags that TCD has been putting on cars? It never made sense that they were just for checking the validity of registrations (other cheaper options could have clamped down on that). Now that most cars have the tags, TCD is more comfortable talking about the future:
[TCD director] Mr. Rochester agreed […]
