Bermuda’s Latest Outpost

February 2nd, 2009 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics, Tourism, Transport

Doctor Brown has opened Bermuda’s 2,600 square foot London office.  In the swingin’ West End baby!  According to the press, the office rent is $800,000 a year and will have a staff of up-to-six on top of that. The goal is to have a “more efficient interface with the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office” which [...]

Bermuda suffered its 17th death for 2008 on the roads today. In 2007, the US had 13.6 road deaths per 100,000 in population.  The UK had 4.8 deaths per 100,000. By comparison, Bermuda now has 26.6 road deaths per 100,000 (based on the UN’s estimate of 64,000 people living here). The word “carnage” comes to [...]

Fifteen is the Saddest Number

November 30th, 2008 · Comments Off · Transport

Bermuda had its fifteenth road death of the year over the weekend. To borrow the unintended wisdom of our Minister of Transportation: “What we do have, is just reason to be offended and insulted … this should be an affront to every Bermudian”. There are no traffic police on the roads. There is no enforcement, [...]

Traffic

October 30th, 2008 · Comments Off · Transport

Many local schools are out for mid-term break this week, leading to the sudden evaporation of Bermuda’s morning rush hour. Traffic has been very light all week.  Poof! I think Bermuda doesn’t have a traffic congestion problem.  It has a school transportation problem.

Trucks

October 22nd, 2008 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics, Transport

Well, that was interesting.  Anyone coming into town this morning is probably a little frazzled by the massive traffic backlogs, exacerbated by large numbers of trucks moving in convoy. Apparently they are staging a protest over Government’s allowing several construction firms to use large quarry dumpster trailers.  You see the law states that these huge [...]

Tag, You’re It!

TCD has released some details about how their RFID tagging system is working. In the first 8 weeks that its four sensors have operated, the system has issued up more than 1,580 violations, each bringing a fine of between $750 to $1,000.  Based on that performance, it’s likely that TCD’s previous estimates that up to [...]

Tag, You’re It!

June 11th, 2008 · Comments Off · Transport

If all went to plan, last week Government turned on the RFID tags that have been applied to every car and truck in Bermuda. It is hoped the “radio frequency ID” tags will reduce the number of vehicles operating without a license. Government reckons that around 6,000 vehicles in Bermuda are unlicense, costing at least [...]

Sleeping Policemen

May 21st, 2008 · Comments Off · Transport

This is just one of the many signs that Bermuda does not take traffic enforcement seriously. Following a collision with a car that allegedly ran a red light more than a month ago, a rider had his leg amputated. Mr. Planes is disappointed with the police response to the accident. The driver of the car [...]

The driving “points” system is intended to some teeth to traffic enforcement. But the Bermuda Sun has revealed that the system is not particularly effective as systems have not been created to track the demerits. And today, the Sun reveals that the Courts are not following the demerit tables anyway. The idea of points systems [...]

Mass Dumping

April 29th, 2008 · Comments Off · Transport

A KBB cleanup just found 90 car batteries thrown in the bushes on North Shore. That’s not litter, that’s a toxic waste site. It cannot be hard to find the garage (or their trucker) that is illegally dumping one and a half tons of hazardous materials in the bushes. This should be treated as a [...]
