Blustery Opinions From Bermuda

Cause and Effect

PLP MP Renee Webb has publicly criticized Dr. Brown’s Workforce Equity Act shakedown, saying “Until you address the education system you cannot turn around and say [business] should hire people who are underqualified.” She’s right and I applaud her courage in standing up against the buzz of sycophancy that dominates the PLP today.

The Bermuda Government has not dealt with the cause … (lackluster high school graduate levels even with Bermuda’s wishywashy home standard, and truly meager college attendance) and is trying to force business to erase the effect (growing pay discrepancy).

Our Government budgetary waste is at record levels – just think what the outcome would be if we tightened those travel budgets and other pork barrels in order to fund more college scholarships for Bermudians!

International business know they must share the wealth Bermudians, and many of our companies contribute significant cash and staff resources. The executives I know want to be part of the Bermuda community.

They are likely to do more if they see Government doing its part instead of engaging in xenophobic race baiting that brands them as unwelcome outsiders. A spirit of partnership will go further than a threat. Formalised equal opportunity policies? Coordinated scholarship funds? What about management trainee programmes, including stints outside Bermuda? What about enhancing Bermuda College as a professional and vocational training facility (instead of its current weak liberal arts status)?
