Confidence, Waning

March 17th, 2010 · No Comments · Bermuda Politics

I don’t think anyone has any real confidence that Government will act to restrain its spending, or plan to work down the debt without strangling the community with taxes.

The budget debate has eroded confidence even further.

  • First, there are the long-winded and meandering briefs by Ministers and their proxies which preclude any debate on the Budget taking place.
  • Second, there’s the admission that the Ministry of Education was asked to slash millions from their budget at the last minute, and that in reality the cuts they describe in the Budget are not the cuts they intend to make.

We have a debate that isn’t a debate.  Briefs that are not brief.  And a budget that isn’t really a budget.  Please stop the room from spinning.

PS: read this, it’s on the money.  Don’t you wish our leaders would analyse our policy options in this way?  Instead of always circle jerking about race, power, and ambition?
