Blustery Opinions From Bermuda

Credibility Lost

People have many opinions regarding the separation between the personal and public life of politicians.  Here’s my deep contribution on the subject: this just does not cut it:

“For those who are asking that I step down, I don’t know how I can take on the action of someone else?”

My criticism comes with a grain of sadness, as I otherwise have a healthy respect for this politician and her commitment to public service.  But if you can’t “take on this action”, how can you take on the other mess of moral and ethical challenges that are sinking Bermuda?

It goes without saying that I am depressed by the number of Bermuda MPs who have criminal proceedings enacted against them or members of their immediate families for offenses ranging from drug running to theft/embezzlement/fraud to serial sexual assault.  Is this the best we can do?  It’s particularly stunning that Bermuda accepts that a Minister be appointed to (and remain) in office while under active prosecution for theft.
