Blustery Opinions From Bermuda

Easy Come, Sleaze Ego

The radio news this morning is reporting that there was a showdown in the PLP Caucus last night, with the PLP backbenchers (with the exception of Zane DeSilva) putting forward, in effect, a no confidence motion on the leadership of Premier Ewart Brown.

They had enough votes to carry the motion, but a decision was made to delay the vote until next week to allow greater participation.  I expect the backroom horsetrading will reach unprecedented levels in the coming days.

Well, I must say that my faith is somewhat restored if this motion is driven by a desire to scrape off the layers of sleaze that have built up around Bermudian official life, rather than just a spat over Dr. Brown’s personality (and you know that’s how he’ll spin it).

There have not been many public opinion polls recently, but I suspect that they would reveal a deep unease amongst the Bermudian electorate over the way that our country is being run.  That unease, by the way, crosses the old divisions of Bermudian politics.  Bermudians are no fools – they know there is too much spin overwhelming accountability, too much self-aggrandisement, too many personal agendas, too many short cuts, and too little sound and transparent management.

Let’s hope they leave the ole “plantation” bogeymen out of this;  the fight is about the future, not the past.  The Opposition does not have the force needed to push Bermuda back on track.  This effort must come from within the PLP … or from new coalitions built amongst people who are committed to honest and good governance in our little community.
