Senator Barack Obama today made a comment that also rings true in Bermuda’s politics. He said:
“I think there’s no doubt that we represent the kind of change that Senator Clinton can’t deliver on and part of it is generational. Senator Clinton and others, they’ve been fighting some of the same fights since the ’60’s, and it makes it very difficult for them to bring the country together to get things done.”
Bermuda’s current Government includes a core of 1960’s activists and radicals. I don’t belittle their civil rights contributions, but the negative impacts of their militancy is often overlooked or romanticised. They still see the world through a filter of ’60’s conflict which makes it very hard for them to contemplate the collaboration that is required to make Bermuda’s community and economy work today. As a result, they may indeed be exacerbating the very tensions they decry.
