Blustery Opinions From Bermuda

Gov 2.0

Government says it’s sincere about wanting to introduce greater transparency.

Umm, then what’s the deal with that creaky-perpetually-out-of-date-and-not-particularly-informative website?

The European Commission’s ePractice portal is about to hold a workshop on the use of internet technology by governments for greater transparency.  The Sunlight Foundation Blog reports:

They rightfully point to TheyWorkForYou, the product of … the United Kingdom-based MySociety.com, as a good example. The organizers see a growing gap between the innovation culture underlying these initiatives and government approaches to information technology innovation in public services.

Governments tend to want to control what information is released and how it is interpreted.  Thus their “web innovation” tends to be, well, dull and useless.

Experience shows that the public wants access to raw data in a way that they can easily sort it and make their own decisions.

In Bermuda, there are a handful of  “cutting edge” Government information services:   Planning, Statistics, and the Judiciary… that’s not enough.  How about getting these on the web?

  • Full Hansard of the House and Senate, as well as rules of the House and legislative schedule
  • Posting and consultation for all pending laws and regulatory changes – government wide
  • Activities of Government statutory boards
  • Official gazette and other Government notices
  • Government procurement – post RFPs and awards

Feel free to send in other ideas!
