In turning down Dr. Brown’s gag order on the media, Puisne Justice Ian Kawaley emphasised the great need to protect “the integrity of the administration of justice” in the courts from political pressures.
Other branches of the justice system would do well to guard their integrity as well. The Commissioner of Police could be viewed as acting with political motive in actions such as the arrest of the Government’s Auditor General and the failed gag orders on the media. It is to his discredit.
Similarly, the desirability of a politically partisan Attorney General also comes into question. The AG’s role is to provide impartial advice to the Government. That impartiality becomes unacceptably damaged when the AG is seen to represent his political colleague to the detriment of the institution.
