Government has announced that it plans to dramatically upgrade the sports facilities at White Hill Field (although those plans are still unfunded). When that funding happens, that’s great news! When that funding happens.
Bermuda needs more facilities to serve the big array of activities in the community. You want to tackle obesity and youthful boredom? Community isolation? Sports are a great answer.
Sports Minister El James says Government has other plans to upgrade similar facilities across the island? If so, why is that plan not public? The best way to get public support (and funding) is share plans and accept input that maximises the use of those facilities!
(By the way, whatever happened to that Government project to help the clubs get back on their feet?)
Minister James also hints that the hope is for some of these sites to “become fully approved one-day international facilities” for cricket. What’s more important is for those facilities to serve our community. That means 5 year olds from all parts of our island learning sports and good lifestyles more than international test cricket. Horse before Cart.
I am critical of previous multimillion dollar investments in cricket and soccer for being focussed mainly on sending senior teams to compete internationally. Much of the money has been spent on travel. That focus is wrong. Think local.
