Amidst the disarray of Gordon Brown’s leadership, it looks like we have a new UK “face” for the Overseas Territories.
The incumbent, Chris Bryant, has been promoted from junior Foreign Office Minister to serve as the new Europe Minister. He switches that role with Lady Glenys Kinnock who picks up responsibility for Africa, South America, Australasia and the Pacific, Consular policy, the Olympics, Protocol, Human Resources and Diversity, as well as Central America and the Caribbean.
EU pundits are already complaining that the move, putting a junior minister in such an in important role (vapidly leaked via Twitter as “Off to work with a new job – minister for Europe”), shows the UK’s disrespect for Europe.
Imagine how the Overseas Territories feel, strung out at the very end of Lady Kinnock’s long laundry list of responsibilities.
