I’ve already commented on the inappropriateness of the Premier’s Farewell Gala fundraiser this weekend. Is there really much to celebrate in the four years of Dr. Brown’s destructathon of Bermuda’s economy, finances, and reputation?
Politics.bm points out Dr. Brown’s startling link between the PGA’s participation in the event and the upcoming renewal of Bermuda’s multimillion dollar sponsorship of the Grand Slam (a decision that Premier himself had questioned just days ago):
“I am pleased that Mr. Steranka [of the PGA] has agreed to join us for the Farewell Gala Weekend and believes his support bodes well for the future relationship between the PGA and Bermuda.”
There’s some contorted wording there: is the Premier saying that Mr. Steranka believes his political support (to be fair, he doesn’t mention money) for the PLP will influence the upcoming Government decision?
If the authorities believe that such a motive and link exists, then I hope they read up on Section 111 of Bermuda’s Criminal Code and the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
It’s sad that we seem to be cultivating a “pay to play” culture just as the United States is making increasing efforts to stamp it out.
Bermuda has few regulations regarding political fundraising or campaign finance. There’s big money in Government these days – and it seems that international dollars are getting involved in local politics. It’s time for us to have some rules and transparency in this area.
