Blustery Opinions From Bermuda

New Crossing

February 23rd, 2010 · No Comments · Bermuda Politics

Like many, I suspect that the frequent closures of the Causeway have more to do with Government’s desire to replace the bridge than concern for its safety.

And indeed, on Friday the Minister of Works & Engineering told Parliament that Government will soon unveil plans for the New Crossing.

Of course, there’s no money left in the coffers and our debt burden is already creaking, so they will consider a public-private partnership to finance the new bridge.  This will raise eyebrows of those suspicious of PFI (nevermind the Bermuda Government’s ability to properly manage a PFI deal).

He made an interesting comment:

“A new structure will not only be economically advantageous, but will also provide a safe and reliable crossing that will enhance the local environment, linking the local parks.”

That implies that their favoured route is #3 or #4.

I am not sure that people care so much about linking paving over parks:  they want a route that makes sense.
