Dr. Brown seems to promote casino gambling as a panacea for all ills.  Such “cure alls” often turn out to be snake oil.

The Bahamas’ incredible Atlantis resort is often used as an example of the “buzz” that gaming can provide.

Well, here are some inconvenient quotes from the managing director of Atlantis about how the rapid expansion of casino and gaming facilities on the US east coast is harming their business:

“This has a serious impact on us,” the Atlantis chief said, questioning why a Florida resident wanting to gamble in a casino would choose the added time and inconvenience of driving to the airport, going through various security and immigration checkpoints and then flying to the Bahamas, when they could virtually pursue their favourite past-time on their doorstep.

“We have to stay competitive,” Mr Markantonis said. “Our gaming business is down 15 per cent year-over-year every year, because there’s so much competition around us. Every US state is opening up casinos.”

Atlantis itself has more rooms in its single resort than the entire Bermuda market and also serves the wider Nassau tourism base.  According to the news reports, Atlantis management is asking the Bahamas to relax the legislative and operational controls on their casino operation to improve profitability.
