The Bermuda Sun reports that a proposed pay increase for MPs will be put before Parliament in the New Year.
You’ve got to be kidding me!
Surveys show that Bermudians currently have a pretty low opinion of our Parliamentary group – on both sides of the aisle – and it sends the wrong message for them to even consider a pay increase while most Bermudians are tightening their buckles.
Moreover, the quality of preparation, debate, and transparency in our Parliament is poor. I do not support any increase for any Parliamentarians until real moves are made for reform. Here are some starters:
- More bipartisan committees, all open to the public, with better consultation before legislation is tabled
- Hansard transcripts
- More open Q&A sessions; reduced time spent on “congrats and obits”
- Voting records by MP
- Freedom of information act
- Anti-corruption act
