The Public Have A Right To Know

October 29th, 2007 · No Comments

Reports from London indicate that the Privy Council today ruled against the Bermuda Government’s attempt to silence the media from reporting further revelations from the leaked BHC documents.

The Bermuda Sun quotes Lord Justice Hoffman of the Privy Council as saying “The public have the right to know if their politicians behaved unethically.”

Dr. Brown and his sycophants in Government ought to be ashamed of this no-hope legal expedition:

  • They hired A Very Expensive English QC to plead their case, while the Bermudian media used Bermuda lawyers.
  • Even with their big gun lawyer, their primary argument was that successive levels of the Bermuda courts “failed to grasp the full importance” of the case. That’s your defense?! To insult your own system?! Are you serious?!
  • The Privy Council also ruled that the Government must pay costs, which will run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Remember this next time the PLP says they are prudent fiscal managers.

Hats off to the local media for standing up to this ethically misguided escapade. Shame on the AG and Police Commissioner who have seen their role as protecting the political elite rather than serving the public interest; if they cannot see that they were on the wrong side of the fence morally, then it’s time for them to go.
