The English press has picked up on the mixed signals coming from the PLP on the Queen’s visit later this month.
It’s as if her presence is an embarrassment to the government.
Granted, the UK media loves to get in a froth over any perceived slight to “special relationships” but they have a point. Very little has been communicated to the public about this Royal visit.
It’s ironic that we spend millions so our leaders can get their pictures taken with fleeting pop stars, but they duck and cover at the prospect of meeting someone who is truly a part of history.
It would be great to have an upbeat and positive occasion for Bermuda, especially given the so-far muted celebrations of 400th anniversary of the island’s settlement. Even if you are ambivalent about the Monarchy, it is a big deal that she’s coming. And if you want to be strictly practical, it is undeniable that this visit – if it had been arranged properly – could have attracted more tourists than the Music Festival.
But when you want to be king, it kind of pops your sizzle when the actual Queen shows up.
