Blustery Opinions From Bermuda

Sales UnFocussed

Bermuda is still holding out hope for a “Platinum Period” of tourism, but the news at the luxury end of the market is pretty bleak.  This does not bode well for Bermuda.

The problem is compounded by the mismanagement of Bermuda’s Ministry of Tourism, which seems hellbent on pursuing “side projects” like the Bermuda Music Festival, Faith Based Something or the Other, the African Diaspora, and multicultural marketing rather than stick to the meat and potatoes of promoting Bermuda’s proven qualities as a destination.

Can you imagine if the large sums that have been misspent were instead invested in improving the quality of the tourism package on the island?

There is no satisfaction in today’s news that the Ministry has already canned Sales Focus, which just months ago was being billed as the saviour of the tourism business.  The massive disruption has set back Bermuda’s marketing efforts during what are already very lean times.  Even with the radical change in strategy, we do not have a clear picture of what Bermuda’s tourism plan will be.

Looking beyond the “pop & sizzle”, I believe the PLP has overseen the total meltdown of Bermuda’s tourism industry.
