Shameless Hucksters

They say that incumbent political candidates have many advantages, leveraging their visibility and larger resources to support their campaign.

For example, many observers noted with wonder how Middle Road was rush paved in the run up to the last election seemingly from edge to edge of the Premier’s constituency.

The PLP has taken it a step further now, with Minister Derrick Burgess saying that the credit for new roadworks in Southampton West Central should go to PLP challenger Marc Bean.

That’s a bit rich.  So does that mean that UBP constituencies get no attention from Government?

This hucksterism illustrates the patronage politics that are so poisonous to Bermuda.  It is a fundamental feature of democracy that governments should not use public resources for private or political ends.  The members of a political party, on entering Government, must make a distinction between their official role and their political activity.
