Shifting Winds

Many of you know that the Turks & Caicos Islands have been struggling with accusations of rampant “official corruption and dishonesty” under the leadership of Premier Michael Misick.  The whole sordid affair has attracted much negative media attention, and the UK has commissioned an independent inquiry (kicking off its own mini-scandal after witnesses allegedly suffered retribution for speaking out).

So far, Premier Misick has been able to stay in power.

Several weeks ago the Opposition tabled a motion of no confidence that was to be read in their House of Assembly next Monday.  This would have given them the ability to query, in painful detail, all the missteps that have occurred in recent years.

To avoid that embarrassment, this week 9 of the 13 MPs in Misick’s own party have written to the Governor stating that they too no longer have confidence in Misick as their leader.

Local news is reporting that Misick may try to dodge that by removing them – his own MPs – from their posts!

This could get very interesting … all this effort to AVOID transparency and accountability, which should be at the heart of public service.

I wish the TCI luck in sorting this out.
