Situational Outrage

March 26th, 2010 · No Comments · Bermuda Politics

Faced with calls to reprimand Senator Marc Bean for calling protestors “muppets” and “pimps”,  Dr. Brown has refused, demonstrating that he sees the world in only black and white:

“Situational outrage is as unacceptable as selective environmentalism.”

That’s absurd.

Every person has issues that are more important to them than others.  It is their human right to be able to voice their concerns – and it is an obligation of an elected Government to acknowledge and address those concerns when they are brought forward by groups representing a spectrum of our community.

The PLP seem to demand blind adherence at all times:  you are either with us or against us.

That’s ridiculous … it fuels the flow of “insider leaks” to the media that so infuriate Dr. Brown, but it also reduces the checks and balances in our governance.  The attitude is authoritarian, and reduces the number of new ideas that bubble up.

In fact, I call the Senator’s and Premier’s remarks anti-democratic and inappropriate for public representatives.

Our politicians have a real hangup about the “respect” due to their elevated grand poo-bah status.  Well, I think we the citizens deserve respect back.

You work for us ….  remember?
