Health experts say that it is only a matter of time before a major influenza pandemic sweeps the world. Since the scares with bird flu a few years ago, many governments have taken to stockpiling anti-virals such as Tamiflu so they can react quickly in the event of an outburst.
With the current outbreak of Swine Flu in Mexico – and possible clusters of illness in the US, Canada, and Spain – the US Government announced that it is moving 12 million doses of the medicine from its stockpile and closer to possible outbreak regions.
Has the Bermuda Government made any preparations for such an event in this little island? Is Bermuda screening travellers arriving from locations with current Swine Flu outbreaks?
Note: The Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 killed 139 in Bermuda out of a population of approximately 20,000. With the increased flow of travellers and larger population, can you imagine such an impact now?
