My Premier went to India and all I got was …
What a joke.
It’s funny how the press release in Bermuda says that the Premier has struck a deal for Bermudians to get reduced tuition at the Mumbai film school … but the film school’s release says the Bermuda Government has agreed to sponsor tuition for [...]

Duelling Press Releases
October 2nd, 2009 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics
I am always suspicious of the breathless press releases from Dr. Brown that claim some diplomatic triumph on his world travels. They smell like spin.
Good Government is about outcomes, not “grip and grin” photo ops.
Witness this report (only covered by the Bermuda Sun, so much for media parity) on the Premier’s meeting with the FCO [...]

Bookman’s Perspective
June 25th, 2009 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics
There’s a glowing piece of puffery floating around the Internet, positioning Dr. Brown as a great humanitarian and “natural born leader”.
Mr. Bookman seems to know a lot about Bermuda’s Premier.
The oddity is that no-one in Bermuda seems to know much about Mr. Bookman.
Indeed, the piece sounds like paid PR. What’s the connection?
The grand irony is [...]

Countrymen

There is some vocal support for Dr. Brown’s Great Uighur Misadventure from his adopted countrymen.
However, most Bermudians don’t concur.
The Rev. Al Sharpton is in Bermuda again and said the following words in support of the Premier:
“If you come out of the ghetto, like I did, you worry afterwards whose mess it was and how it [...]

Grooming
June 10th, 2009 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics
You’ve got to wonder if Cabinet Office spin doctor Glenn Jones is being groomed for bigger things.
First he goes on the offensive on talk radio, making overtly political statements, which is a big no-no for civil servants. Then he is chosen to throw out the first ball during Bermuda’s big $500,000 sponsorship of the Boston [...]

Intellectually Bereft

David Burt wrote a contorted opinion for the Bermuda Sun last week comparing the Royal Gazette to Fox News saying:
“if you repeat a lie long enough, it becomes truth”
I am not sure if that’s his accusation or his colleagues’ philosophy.
Take a read of the comments posted by readers. Here’s a taste:
I can’t recall reading a [...]

Freedom of the Tweet
May 19th, 2009 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics, Media
Reluctant to talk with the mean ole media, the Premier has posted a brief justification on Facebook for granting a two-year sole source contract extension to GlobalHue, despite legitimate concerns over the success of the agency in attracting tourists to Bermuda and complaints from the Auditor General regarding the agency’s billing practices.
Yes, on Facebook. Which [...]

Liars, Horsetheives, and Politicians

Predictably the PLP website is spinning Government’s failure to collect on the $15 million owed to it as some sort of magical achievement … rather than the gross management failure and dereliction of responsibility it really is on the part of both the BIU and the PLP.
The level of dishonesty and cynicism is pretty sad.
See [...]

Soft Censorship
May 12th, 2009 · No Comments · Media
The wrong-headedness of the Bermuda Government’s recent attempts to muzzle the media in Bermuda is attracting more external attention:
More trouble in paradise for the staff of Bermuda’s Royal Gazette and its sister newspaper, the Mid-Ocean News, after premier Ewart Brown bizarrely responded to their campaign for more government transparency and a freedom of information law [...]

Filtering out the Spin
May 8th, 2009 · Comments Off · Bermuda Politics, Media
Speaking about the Premier’s order for Government media representatives to reduce their contact with certain news papers, the coordinator of the well-known “Sunshine Week” freedom of information campaign says:
“Cutting reporters and their news outlets out of government communications — whether it’s not sending them press releases or refusing to return reporters’ calls — is simply [...]
