Lt Colonel Burch is in the news today saying that all the worries about term limits are misguided as he’s approved 95 percent of the requests for waivers “for workers in eligible positions”.
- Arguably he is saying that the policy is empty – a political grandstand that the PLP does not take seriously – even at the risk of damaging our relationship with our customers.
- In many cases, companies have decided not to request a waiver for valued employees, wishing to “save their favours” with Immigration. They simply rotated the employees to another location. Damage done.
- In other cases, companies have requested a waiver for important employees, and been successful after a long period of hassle and uncertainty. Damage equally done.
I think the Minister is attempting to back down from the policy without coming out and admitting it has damaged the Bermudian economy.
Update: After this climbdown, international business says they heart the Lt Colonel again.
