Term Limits ~ Epic Fail

February 13th, 2009 · No Comments · Bermuda Politics

Term limits have been one of the major points of resentment amongst international companies in Bermuda, and have been the direct cause for many management positions being shifted out of the island to other jurisdictions.

This undermines the “nexus of knowledge” that has made the Bermuda market so attractive, and also has negative consequences for the employment of Bermudians.

Indeed, Bermuda is today an exporter of qualified talent … to our competitors!

The PLP have consistently refused to acknowledge the destructiveness of the term limits policy.  Even today, Dr. Brown comments:

“Some of the noise we heard about term limits, when you look at the research the average length of stay for a person in international business on a work permit is three years so why all the noise over six?”

If that’s the case, then surely one would ask “why the need for term limits at all”?  Those employees who stay on – and have their contracts renewed – are the most valuable.

And do you really view your customers’ desperate complaints as “noise”?

Term limits have been useful to the PLP as a political grandstand, but as  public policy they are a disaster for Bermuda.  A self goal.  An epic fail.

They are emblematic of the lack of understanding and disdain the PLP leaderhip have shown to international business.

Update:  Same old … Parliament met today.  Who knew?  Is it that hard to publish the agenda in advance?  I mean really?
