In the past year, Dr. Brown has added a series of “management internships” in the Cabinet Office to attract Bermudian college graduates to work for the Government.
However, I’d rather they were working for the “revenue generating” private sector than the “tax consuming” public sector! Government’s headcount is frighteningly high as a proportion of the Bermudian workforce.
I would be more impressed if the Bermuda Government choose to work with Bermuda’s international companies to build an internship programme for talented young Bermudians in their overseas operations. Not just promote them here … develop them internationally as well.
I know that many international companies are doing this already on their own account. But it would be a sign of cooperation if Government were willing to recognise and reward these investments. Stop using the stick and try the carrot!
If we are serious about getting Johnny trained up to replace Sven, then we need more young Bermudians with top academic qualifications AND international work experience in the industries that drive Bermuda.
